Course Description

This interdisciplinary course explores the history, culture, and politics of the city of Buenos Aires from the Colonial times to the present. Through films and readings the course will also offer a panoramic study of the city (and the country), focusing on various cultural, political, and artistic manifestations including popular icons and symbols such as tango, Evita, Borges, Gardel, Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, soccer, and others. We will examine them as specific elements that construct national identity.

Course Description

This interdisciplinary course focuses on the experiences of Latin American immigrants and exiles living in the United States and Spain, which have inspired an important number of recent and contemporary novels, films, and theoretical debates on cultural identity and immigration. Through films and readings, the course analyzes current issues such as the process of adaptation, resistance to new cultures; culture transfer, hybridity and culture diversity; language barrier, xenophobia/racism and cultural uprooting.

Course Description

This course deals with literary, linguistics, or cultural topics—or a combination of these. Its primary emphasis is on developing an understanding of contemporary cultures in Latin America. Taught in Spanish. Prerequisite: SPAN 0212 or equivalent.
